A study permit is a written authorization issued to a foreign national that authorizes him/her to engage in academic, professional, vocational, or other education or training that is more than  six months in duration at a DLI (designated learning institution). International students are a prescribed class of persons who may obtain temporary resident status when they have been issued a study permit as a member of student class.

Foreign nationals who wish to work in Canada are part of the temporary residents’ worker class.  They are generally required to obtain a work permit and a genuine job offer.  The eligibility criteria for applying under the worker class can be complex.
